Over the past five years we have had a few residents go to Mexico, Central America and South America with local church groups and physicians. Our residency program has not sanctioned or authorized any formal developing nation location or experience. Residents usually take a vacation rotation and plan these trips on their own. We refer residents to participate with the Institute for International Medicine (INMED), based in Liberty, MO, which offers a variety of opportunities in developing nations in locations and settings around the world.

Location(s) of program: INMED has opportunities in China, Middle East, several locations in Africa, Mexico, Central and South America.

Description of field experience: Field experience is with board-certified physicians (usually family physicians) living long-term in the host country. These physicians are attuned to native cultures and customs. Site experience ranges from tertiary hospitals to isolated bush-country locations and most anything in between. Durations vary by resident preference from 2 weeks to 2 months.

Description of didactics: Residents are required to read well-written texts and complete a training course prior to participation and for follow-up after the trip.

Cost to individual resident: Around $3,000 per trip.

Description of faculty involvement: Currently investigating the possibility of collaborating with the government, public health and church leaders in Malawi with the goal of improving health education

Does the program accept residents from outside the program for trips? No

Approximate time of year/duration of trips: INMED offers trips at all times. Residents can choose a trip that is consistent with their needs and schedules.
