Description of Program

Faculty-led international medicine rotations available for residents and medical students. Emphasis is on procedural, surgical and obstetric training in robust underserved mission hospitals.
Location(s) of program: Rotations scheduled in Thailand, Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya for the next two years.

Description of field experience: Trips vary from two to four weeks depending on location.The trips to Kenya and Ghana are very intense, busy rotations with advanced skill training in OB and surgery as primary focus. The trip to Thailand is geared more toward family medicine curriculum and training associated with Thai medical schools and family medicine programs along with trips to remote tribal villages to do primary health care projects and research.

Description of didactics: Preparation for medical students begins in first year with defined curricular activities to prepare for international trips. Residents take part in procedural and didactic preparation integrated into regular

Cost to individual resident: Africa trips cost about $2,500. Scholarships are available through the Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA) and other organizations. A non-profit corporation, Family Medicine International, has been started to help raise support.

Description of faculty involvement: Brazos FM requires one core faculty to be present to count as an elective international rotation. Currently, three or four faculty members rotate once or twice a year on trips.
