Description of Program

Multiple rotation opportunities including inpatient, outpatient (including remote village healthcare) and gynecology up to 4 weeks in duration during the second and third years of training.
Location(s) of program: India (including but not limited to trekking trips in the Indo-Tibetan Borderlands), Cameroon, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Nepal.

Description of field experience: Field experiences are different depending on location. The Nicaragua trip is a 10- to 14-day trip focusing on women's health (including paps/pelvics and treatment). The Himalayan Health Exchange trips include remote and wilderness medicine/health training. The urban India rotation is located in an urban hospital. The Guatemala and Cameroon trips are focused on village and remote medicine. As mentioned earlier the rotations are 2 to 4 weeks in duration.

Description of didactics: Each trip has a daily didactic schedule. The residents are often asked to provide some of the teaching, especially when the trips include medical students.

Cost to individual resident: Residents are responsible for the cost of the travel and board. Housing is provided. The residency helps the residents raise money from the CMMC medical staff as well as donations from former Wilderness and International Medicine residents (WIMPS).

Number of residents who have participated in the last two years: 8

Description of faculty involvement: There is always a board-certified, US-trained physician on the trip. Three-fourths of the time this is a CMMC FMRP faculty member or an adjunct clinical faculty person; the remainder of the time it is a contact that our faculty has made in that country who teaches the residents/students and provides supervision for their work.

Does the program accept medical students for trips? Yes

Does the program accept residents from outside the program for trips? Yes

Approximate time of year/duration of trips: Spread out throughout the academic year.
