International Family Practice Training Program is a joint venture between Genesys Regional Medical Center (GRMC) and Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital (SRRSH) affiliated with Zhejiang University Medical School. The goal of the program is to help transform the Chinese medical system from specialty to primary care based care. Through the program, we exchange medical students and residents with Zhejiang University Medical School.

Location(s) of program: Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China

Description of field experience: The objectives of this program for medical students and residents in China is to learn different diseases spectrum, to experience the Chinese culture in the setting of practicing medicine, to witness how medical care is delivered in a country where primary care still does not really exist, to exchange your knowledge with Chinese counterpart and to see how alternative medicine such as traditional Chinese medicine is integrated in their day to day medical practice.

Description of didactics: Didactics is given one half day a week. Topics are common medical problems in family medicine.

Cost to individual resident: Airfare, room and board are free of charge to residents.

Number of residents who have participated in the last two years: One. The program is less than one year old as of October 2010. Another resident is going to SRRSH in January 2011.

Description of faculty involvement: Faculty from Genesys Regional Medical Center Family Practice Residency Program is closely involved in resident’s education.

Does the program accept medical students for trips? Yes, we do. But only for Michigan State University College of Human Medicine students.

Does the program accept residents from outside the program for trips? No.

Approximate time of year/duration of trips: Each rotation is limited to one month.
