Description of Program
John Peter Smith Family Residency Program has expanded opportunities for residents to receive substantial training in international medicine. Our P4 program has now added a fellowship in International Medicine, which includes added training in international health, tropical medicine, procedural training and maternal health, along with a wide variety of faculty-supervised international rotations in countries such as Israel, Thailand, Kenya, Ghana, India and other locations. A robust International Health Clinic functioning within our Family Health Center provides ongoing experience with patients from all over the world who are coming to the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area.
Location(s) of program: Fort Worth, Thailand, Israel, Kenya, Ghana, India and others
Description of field experience: 3- to 4-week rotations with faculty supervision and varied emphases on family medicine education and procedural training.
Description of didactics: Wednesday afternoon didactics include special emphasis on international topics every month. Residents are enabled and encouraged to attend intensive international training seminar in concert with the INMED organization for two weeks every year.
Cost to individual resident: Varies according to site. The alumni foundation at JPS has provided assistance for many residents.

Description of faculty involvement: Multiple faculty are directly involved, supervise and participate in trips to Thailand, India, Israel, Ghana and Kenya.
Does the program accept medical students for trips? Yes
Does the program accept residents from outside the program for trips? Yes
Approximate time of year/duration of trips: Jan/Feb -- Thailand (2 weeks); March -- Israel (4 weeks); Aug/Sept -- Kenya (3+ weeks). Future plans include trips to Papua New Guinea, and multiple other trips are available through INMED.
