Based in a community health center in a largely Hispanic immigrant community, LFMR offers global health opportunity in our own continuity clinic and abroad. Through the Global Health Track, residents have the opportunity to explore the interaction of community and global health through longitudinal curriculum as well as clinical electives to our continuity sites in the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Ghana, and Nepal in addition to other optional experiences

Location(s) of program:
Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu, Ghana (surgical focus)
Montellano, Dominican Republic (public health focus)
Mongallo, Nicaragua (outpatient clinical focus)
Nepal Trek (outpatient clinic focus)

Description of field experience:
Ghana – operating rooms, outpatient clinic, inpatient rounds under the supervision of our own faculty.
Dominican Republic – continuity public health experience in partnership with an NGO under supervision of our own faculty.
Nicaragua – annual trip to conduct rural clinics and equip local community to continue care year-long under supervision of our own faculty.
Nepal – trek through the Himalayas to conduct field clinics under supervision of our own faculty.

Description of didactics: Required pre-departure training self-study. Required report upon return from elective. Longitudinal global health curriculum delivered by expert faculty during the course of the year. Case-based daily teaching during electives.

Cost to individual resident:
Resident may use CME money but needs to cover own expenses. Expenses vary.

Number of residents who have participated in the last two years:
Ghana – 8; DR – 16; Nicaragua – 2; Nepal - 1

Description of faculty involvement:
Faculty accompany the residents on each of these electives and serve as one on one preceptors for procedures and patient encounters while mentoring the residents in their global health experience.

Does the program accept medical students for trips?
Ghana – no; DR – not currently; Nicaragua – yes; Nepal – not currently

Does the program accept residents from outside the program for trips?
Not currently but partnerships are underway.

Approximate time of year/duration of trips:
Ghana – fall and spring 2 weeks; DR – fall and spring 10 days; Nicaragua – late winter 1 week; Nepal – fall 10 days.
