Innovative and unique P4 program which longitudinally combines three years of Family Medicine, two years of Preventive Medicine and completion of a Global Health Masters in Public Health (MPH) together in a four-year Global Health Track. Loma Linda University has a 100-year history of training physicians for mission service, with an unmatched network of affiliated hospitals worldwide. Required overseas rotations include one month in second and third years and up to three months in fourth year. We provide real-world international experience and a skill set for use in international and community-based settings with a whole-person care emphasis that is unique to Loma Linda. Residents will graduate double-board eligible with MPH, ready for leadership in global health. The first class of residents entered this newly approved program in 2006. From two to four residents per year are accepted.

Location(s) of program: We are located in sunny, warm, multicultural Southern California, 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

Description of field experience: One month is spent overseas in a location of the resident's choice in second and third years of residency. Up to three months is spent overseas in fourth year. Weekend mission trips to Mexico will occur throughout the residency. Local involvement with underserved multicultural community clinics provides a nearby "learning lab" for service and strategies to meet community needs with limited resources.

Description of didactics: All residents in the Global Health track will complete a Global Health MPH at the LLU School of Public Health. Approximately three-quarters of the tuition is paid for by the University using an employee tuition benefit program. Other family medicine focused didactics are integrated longitudinally.

Cost to individual resident: Salary and benefits are maintained throughout all global rotations, and some travel reimbursement may be available. The resident will pay for approximately one-fourth of the MPH.

Description of faculty involvement: Faculty from both Family and Preventive Medicine departments collaborate together to provide advising, precepting and teaching. Rural track faculty also participate on some global trips. Because of LLU's long tradition of global health and over 100 affiliated hospitals worldwide, mentors with phenomenal experience are readily available.

Does the program accept residents from outside the program for trips? No

Approximate time of year/duration of trips: Since rotations can be planned at almost any time, the trips will vary from year to year. Often something is happening in April/May time frame.
