In conjunction with Shoulder to Shoulder, our program supports international health through trips to Honduras. Our curriculum is designed to give residents and other practitioners specific training in international health with an emphasis on primary care, public health and community-oriented primary care.

Location(s) of program: Brigades provide care in Santa Lucia and Concepcion in Intibuca, Honduras.

Description of field experience: Two two-week field experiences occur in October and February. Brigades provide acute and trauma care as well as pregnancy care and deliveries, in addition to basic primary care.

Description of didactics: A two-week international health course is available for medical students and residents. It includes courses in epidemiology, cross-cultural medicine, and community-oriented primary care.

Cost to individual resident: Residents are expected to use approximately $450 of their continuing medical education funds to offset costs.

Number of residents who have participated in the last two years: 15

Description of faculty involvement: Faculty lead brigades and provide oversight of the clinical experience, which includes acute and trauma care as well as care of pregnancies and all other primary care of adults and children. Faculty lead rounds at the end of the day and help coordinate community-led health projects.
