Opportunities are widely diverse and may range from living and working in an isolated clinic to working in a hospital in an urban area, depending on the interests of the resident. There are even opportunities (in conjunction with our Sports Medicine Fellowship) to cover international sporting events.

Location(s) of program: There are opportunities in South and Central America, Africa, Europe, Pacific Islands, and the Caribbean. Most end up going to Latin America.

Description of field experience: This varies, depending on the interests of the resident. It always involves direct participation by the resident (not simply observation). The focus is on direct patient care, sometimes includes formal language study, and may also include participation in research.

Description of didactics: The preparation for any given experience is individualized and includes assigned reading. Didactics during the time abroad vary between trips.

Cost to individual resident: The program underwrites a substantial portion of the costs. Most years, this includes travel expenses and also living expenses. In years where more residents select high-cost experiences, the amount covered may be adjusted.

Description of faculty involvement: Faculty members lead the trips in some cases, and other times faculty may accompany residents and work along with them. Often, experiences are supervised by non-faculty physicians who may be permanent or long-term international health care workers.

Approximate time of year/duration of trips: Duration may range from one week to one month.
