Our program has various opportunities for residents to spend time on rotations or short-term medical missions. Residents have the option of designing their own rotations or going with a faculty member on one of two to three yearly medical mission trips that occur at pre-planned times and locations. A long-term relationship with one of our recent graduates in the medical mission field is currently being designed.

Location(s) of program: Trips are made annually to Peru and El Salvador by faculty. Uganda is the location for the planned elective with one of our graduates, and residents in recent years have gone also to Haiti, Botswana, Bolivia, Mexico, Jamaica and Albania.

Description of field experience: Usually 1-2 weeks for short term medical missions. Electives should be at least 2 weeks but preferably one month. All residents and students will work with local medical personnel or mission team leaders to provide primary and acute care to local residents in need. Experiences vary but often include clinic and hospital duties and minor procedures.

Description of didactics: Formal didactics are left to the discretion of the supervising preceptor/faculty.

Cost to individual resident: Varies by location and time spent. Minimum cost includes air travel and lodging outside of the final destination.

Description of faculty involvement: Two faculty have made regular yearly trips to Peru and El Salvador, often serving as the team medical director for the mission. Dr. Theron Hutton, a 2007 graduate, will be an adjunct faculty based in Uganda starting in 2008-2009.

Does the program accept residents from outside the program for trips? Yes

Approximate time of year/duration of trips: Planning must occur well in advance for visiting students and residents as trips occur in both fall and spring but are of short duration.
