The Medical Mission elective rotation is a one-block elective to provide a unique and defined experience available in a developing nation. Experiences vary at different locations but residents use their clinical skills on populations in need of basic primary care. Activities may include triage medicine, physical exams, bedside procedures, antibiotic coverage and uses, wound care and assisting in surgeries, with emphasis on providing medical care with limited resources.
While it is preferred that the resident be at the R3 level to take this elective, a R2 or R1 would be considered with approval from the Program Director and the Associate Program Director managing rotations. However, two residents on the same clinic team will not be allowed to be gone simultaneously. Those residents taking this elective retain their GTFC clinic responsibilities, so need to schedule those accordingly.

Location(s) of international program: Residents are allowed to find a location for their medical missions at their own discrepancy.

Description of field experience: The field experiences may consist of a one-week experience or a two or four week rotation. Any special arrangements or expenses for travel (e.g. passport, visa etc.), professional licensure, malpractice coverage, approval from the destination site or immunizations are the responsibility of the resident. In addition, the resident is responsible for all travel, housing and meal arrangements and related expenses. Financial assistance is available for some of these expenses. A qualified, pre-approved preceptor must be on site at all times and the experience must include a minimum of 40 hours of structured experiences per week. The preceptor is responsible for providing learning experiences to meet the goals and objectives of the rotation as well as assessing the resident at the completion of the rotation. Additional learning objectives to those identified below can be collaboratively determined by the resident and the preceptor, if desired.

Description of didactics: Didactic experiences vary based on location and preceptor, however, clinical experiences emphasize providing medical care with limited resources.

Cost to individual resident: Costs to the resident vary depending on location of the site. Any special arrangements or expenses for travel (e.g. passport, visa etc.), professional licensure, malpractice coverage, approval from the destination site or immunizations are the responsibility of the resident. In addition, the resident is responsible for all travel, housing and meal arrangements and related expenses.
Financial assistance is available for some of these expenses from the Baptist Trinity Lutheran Legacy Foundation.

Description of faculty involvement: Faculty of the Research Family Medicine Residency Program may assist the individual resident by providing information on available organizations and sites for medical missions. A part-time faculty member, Dr. Nicholas Comninellis is the CEO of the Institute of International Medicine (INMED), located in Kansas City, MO and can offer valuable information on these educational experiences.

Approximate time of year/duration of trips: Medical Mission rotation elective can be taken at anytime during the academic year, depending on the individual resident’s rotation schedule.
