Description of Program
Two residents and a faculty member go to a rural town in Mexico and provide primary care services for a week.
Location(s) of program: Cuana, Yolo and Cumiapa Mexico.
Description of field experience: Ten-hour days providing sick call at three rural clinics, doing audiometry and making house calls. Electronic health record and OB ultrasound are used.
Description of didactics: Daily debriefing, training in audiometry, OB ultrasound and rural care with limited resources are taught.
Cost to individual resident: $1,000, which is reimbursed by the hospital upon their return.
Number of residents who have participated in the last two years: 2
Description of faculty involvement: One faculty member accompanies the residents and provides direct supervision.
Does the program accept medical students for trips? No
Does the program accept residents from outside the program for trips? Yes
Approximate time of year/duration of trips: Each January for 10 days (including travel time).
