St. Joseph Mercy Livingston (SJML) Family Medicine Residency Program is a relatively new program located in a suburban/rural area of Livingston County Michigan. We are an unopposed program in a small community hospital with a focus on community wellness both locally and abroad.

Location(s) of international program: A once-a-year trip to a developing nation near the U.S. and every other year a trip to Africa.

Description of field experience:
Residents who elect to participate in the global health tract have two opportunities for field experiences. One is a yearly trip to a developing nation near the U.S. where residents participate in setting up clinics, providing health care, educating or other activities needed in our host communities. The second one is a trip to Africa which goes every-other-year. We are a new residency program and our global health tract is only a few years old. We have been to Haiti twice, Guatemala once and Mali once.

Description of didactics:
Didactics are ongoing and cover a variety of subjects. They are taught by core faculty with global experience, outside speakers and the residents in the tract. They include:
• Overview of global health and the burden of disease
• Health indicators and their use and limitation
• Institutions and organizations involved in global health including policy
• Environmental health including water issues, sanitation issues and man-made and natural disasters
• Global health ethics and professionalism
• Cultural, social and behavioral determinants of health
• Social justice and global health including human rights
• Specific diseases including but not limited to:
-malaria, tuberculosis including MDR, HIV, measles/mumps, cholera and parasitic diseases, nutrition, maternal and child health

Cost to individual resident:
Residents are required to pay for their own immunizations, passport and personal items purchased including food at airports. All other costs are provided by the program.

Description of faculty involvement:
A minimum of one of our core physician faculty goes on the trip to supervise resident. We believe that residents should practice abroad in the same way they practice in our clinic. The trip usually included our behavioral medicine faculty for support of the residents and to help in education. Our program director has done global trips for many years and he along with the rest of the core faculty are committed to this program.

Does the program accept medical students for trips? Not at this time, but something we would consider.
