Location(s) of program: Kenya, Nicaragua and Peru.
Description of field experience: Inpatient and outpatient care in developing world settings. Each site has its unique features - see Web site above for details.
Description of didactics: Monthly didactic conference for International Health Area of Concentration participants.
Cost to individual resident: Residents must use their CME allowance ($1,250) from their second and third years to subsidize travel. The rest of travel and lodging is paid by a foundation grant.
Number of residents who have participated in the last two years: 9
Description of faculty involvement: Faculty are engaged directly at two of the sites, visiting nearly annually and accompanying residents.
Does the program accept medical students for trips? No
Does the program accept residents from outside the program for trips? Yes
Approximate time of year/duration of trips: 1 month, variable scheduling. We only can send residents from our programs but would help other programs to contact the sites if they are interested in long-term engagement at the site.
