One- to two-week trips usually to the Caribbean or to Central American countries to learn about local health needs and infrastructure. Clinical services are provided to local residents with the assistance of non-governmental organizations. Residents may pursue other international opportunities with program approval as well. We "share" some trips with the FSU COM.

Location(s) of program: Recently we have sent residents to Jamaica, Belize and Nicaragua.

Description of field experience: Under the supervision of either residency faculty, other U.S.-based faculty or local physicians, residents participate in clinical care of patients in underserved areas. Usually, this is in temporary clinic facilities. We are assisted on site by local organizations made up of nationals, expatriates, or a combination of the two. Duration may be from 7 to 10 days for residency-sponsored programs. Living conditions are generally quite basic. We are working on developing a returning experience to the same area each year, with continuity in community health development.

Description of didactics: Pre-trip reading is assigned, with discussion of relevant clinical topics during pre-trip planning.

Cost to individual resident: Residency will cover cost of one trip per resident (up to $1,500) for program-sponsored trips. Others will be covered as funds allow. Residents may use CME money to fund trip if needed.

Description of faculty involvement: Faculty helps to plan trips and participates on most of our one- to two-week trips. Pre-trip readiness and teaching is done by faculty.

Approximate time of year/duration of trips: Varies. Usually one trip coincides with FSU spring break, and another with summer break.
