Description of Program

International medicine is offered as an elective during the second or third year of training. Residents may take advantage of one of many opportunities. Faculty is involved in two different opportunities, one which staffs a medical clinic in Quito, Ecuador, and the other which serves a severely impoverished population in the Peten region in Guatemala.
Location(s) of program: Quito, Ecuador, and Peten, Guatemala. Others available.

Description of field experience: Duration of experience can be from one week to one month each academic year. Clinical experiences include community clinics and travel into the communities to provide care for those in need. Populations treated include adults and children, as well as an emphasis on gynecologic care (Guatemala).

Description of didactics: No formal didactics are included, but a presentation to share experiences with others is encouraged.

Cost to individual resident: Resident must pay for airfare and accommodations while traveling. Depending on length of trip and desired outside travel, a reasonable cost range would be $1,000 to $2,500.

Description of faculty involvement: Dr. Matus travels one week each year, and residents are welcome to travel at the same time if convenient. Other times are available as well.
