The University of New Mexico offers its family medicine residents the opportunity to incorporate international rotations into their three-year training program schedule. We feel this will benefit both the resident and our New Mexico communities, as well. The rotation is a four-week elective.

Location(s) of program: Residents may select from a number of sites or may coordinate a location of their choosing. Our faculty have a wealth of international experience and contacts, and they eagerly assist residents in selecting a location.

Description of field experience: Rotations are typically four weeks in duration. The focus of the experience may vary with residents working in direct clinical settings, community programs, educational venues or multidisciplinary sites.

Description of didactics: Topics related to global health and international health care are included in the didactic series of the program.

Cost to individual resident: Residents finance their own travel and lodging, but still remain on the payroll for their monthly salary and benefits.

Number of residents who have participated in the last two years: 15

Description of faculty involvement: In addition to assisting residents with site selection, faculty welcome residents' participation in ongoing projects in Guatemala, Kenya and other locations.

Does the program accept medical students for trips? UNM medical students are given priority. Medical students from other institutions are coordinated through the UNM School of Medicine's Student Affairs Office.

Does the program accept residents from outside the program for trips? No.
