The main program is a two-week experience in Honduras. It is a COPC project where the resident works with a local board, sees patients under supervision, and works with various community development projects. There is also flexibility to take an elective in another setting if the resident has well thought out goals and objectives and has appropriate supervision. Just beginning is an international track in conjunction with the three other UPMC programs. The resident will have an international experience each year, with extra educational sessions and training and an added certificate at the end of residency in global health. The School of Public Health will also be involved in this track.

Location(s) of program: Primarily in Yoro Province, Honduras.

Description of field experience: Two weeks per year seeing patients and participating in community development and research projects.

Description of didactics: Five half-day sessions on various topics related to global health. The didactic program is in the process of being expanded to monthly didactics for those in the global health track.

Cost to individual resident: Currently the cost of plane fare only, about $625. Funds have been raised to offset the total cost for residents in the new global health track.

Description of faculty involvement: Faculty volunteer their time and pay their own way. They supervise patient care and give continuity to the various projects.

Does the program accept residents from outside the program for trips? Yes

Approximate time of year/duration of trips: Usually two weeks in April and two weeks in October. The program is expanding to include other times.
