How to Log In

AAFP Members and paid subscribers to American Family Physician (AFP), Family Practice Management (FPM) and the Home Study program can log in to access restricted content and services. To log in, you must have your 7-digit AAFP Identification Number.

Individuals should use their AAFP ID Number and their last name to log in. Institutions should use their AAFP ID Number and the password "aafp." If you previously specified a password, use your AAFP ID Number and your password.

You may stayed logged in as long as your browser is open. If you want to log out, click the "Log out" button. Closing your browser will also log you out.

Log In Trouble

  • Be sure that cookies are enabled in your web browser. For help with enabling cookies please see the section titled Cookies.
  • If you use internet security and/or privacy software, be sure that cookies are enabled or configure your software to accept cookies from our site. Please refer to the help section of the software you're using for instructions on enabling cookies.
  • If you use Internet Explorer go to Tools > Internet Options > Privacy then click Edit near the bottom of the screen. This is a list of sites that you're selectively blocking cookies from. Be sure our site isn't in the list.
  • Try deleting your temporary internet files (cache). To do this in Internet Explorer go to Tools > Internet Options then click Delete Temporary Internet files.
  • If you continue to have trouble or require additional instruction, contact the AAFP Contact Center.

Finding Your AAFP ID Number

AAFP Members

Your seven-digit AAFP ID number is included on your American Academy of Family Physicians membership card. (How to become a member.) If you can't find your ID number and you have a current e-mail address on file, you may retrieve your AAFP ID# online. If your e-mail has changed or we do not have it on file, you will be unable retrieve your ID# online. The Contact Center can assist you with updating your e-mail address; you can reach them by phone at 800-274-2237 or by email at contactcenter@aafp.org.

You may also obtain your AAFP ID number by sending a fax on your office or personal letterhead to the AAFP Contact Center, (913) 906-6269 (student and resident members may use medical school or residency letterhead). Be sure to include your full name and how you can be reached. The AAFP will reply to your request within one working day.

If you do not have access to a fax machine, you may mail the request on your letterhead to:

Non-member Subscribers to American Family Physician (AFP) and/or Family Practice Management (FPM)

Your AAFP ID number is seven digits and is located on the mailing label of the journal(s) to which you subscribe. If you cannot find your AAFP ID number, staff in the AAFP Contact Center can assist you.

Non-member Subscribers to the Home Study program

Your Home Study ID number is seven digits and is located on your Home Study invoice and/or Home Study receipt. Log in using your Home Study ID number and your last name. If you cannot find your Home Study ID number, staff in the AAFP Contact Center can assist you.

Last Name/Password (Members Only)

The log-in system has two fields: (1) AAFP ID number and (2) your last name/password. Information below explains what AAFP members should enter in the last name/password field. If you are not a member of the AAFP, the Contact Center can help you with your password.

  • If you never set up a password, enter your last name.
  • If you have previously set up a password, enter it instead of your last name.
  • If you wish, you may set up a password instead of using your last name.
  • If you have a password, you may change your existing password.
  • If you have forgotten your password, you may retrieve it here.

  • Enabling cookies in your browser:
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and 7
      • Select the "Tools" pull-down menu and then select "Internet Options." Select the tab labeled "Privacy." If a slider is present, select "Medium" or if set to "Custom" click "Advanced". "Accept/Enable" should be checked under "First-Party Cookies, also be sure "Always allow session cookies" is checked, then click Ok.
    • Mozilla Firefox
      • Select the "Tools" pull-down menu and then select "Options." Select the tab labeled "Privacy." Click the "+" next to the "Cookies" option. Make sure box next to "Allow sites to set cookies" is checked before clicking the "Ok" button to retain these settings.
    • Apple Safari
      • Select "Safari" from the tool bar and then select "Preferences." Select the tab labeled "Security." Make sure "Always" or "Only from sites you navigate to" is checked then click the Red close button to retain the settings.
