Public Health Award

Created: 1989 (First presented in 1992)

This award recognizes individuals who have made or are making extraordinary contributions to the American public's health. Nominees may be:
  • non-physicians who have an extraordinary impact on the public health of their community, state or nation; or
  • practicing physicians who go beyond their patient community and have an extraordinary impact on the public health; or
  • physicians working in public health who have an extraordinary impact on public health.

Process and Timing:

Recommendations for this award are made via the normal Board recommendation process. When a Public Health Award is approved for presentation, the Staff Award Coordinator will:
  • notify recipients by letter over President's signature
  • order award (plaque)
  • coordinate travel arrangements
The AAFP Public Relations Staff will:
  • prepare news script to be used at award presentation
  • provide a release template on the AAFP Web page with links to Award descriptions and a sample release for use by the recipient
