Hours:

Monday - Friday, 37.5 hours per week
Additional time as needed

Travel:

Approximately 20-25 days annually

Summary of Responsibilities:

News Department associate editors research, write and edit news, features and analysis/interpretation articles about family medicine; the larger world of medicine; and the Academy’s policies, products and events for AAFP news publications, including AAFP News Now, the Academy’s official news publication delivered in online, e-mail, print and podcast formats. They travel on assignment; shoot photographs to accompany articles; and work with graphic designers to develop concepts to illustrate and augment content and to enhance the visual appeal of articles. They track trends in medicine and the larger world and forecast/interpret what they will mean for physicians, AAFP and our news publications. They also provide editorial services for other AAFP divisions.

Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, or related field, plus at least four years of journalism or related experience, including editing; writing of news, feature and analysis/interpretation articles; publication production; photojournalism skills; and proofreading. Strongly preferred: health reporting background. Must have knowledge of the health care system; physician issues; libel law; news, feature and interpretation/analysis writing, film and digital photography, writing and editing for physician and for patient/consumer publications; proofreading; online and print publishing processes and procedures; podcasting; research skills (medical literature, Internet); basic statistical skills (to interpret study data). Must be familiar with Macintosh, Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel. Also needed: strong interpersonal communication skills for regular contact with AAFP Board members, other AAFP members, AAFP staff, other organizations’ officers and the public; strong organizational skills; ability to meet multiple deadlines and work as a team member; eyesight sufficient to proofread detailed and lengthy copy; ability to perform tasks independently, especially when on assignment away from AAFP headquarters; and the physical ability and stamina to travel, ability to use the phone, work at a computer, use digital and film cameras, and lift about 35 pounds on a regular basis.
