Prevention and Treatment of Overweight in Childhood: A Family-Centered Approach

This program provides an overview of the causes of overweight in children, and the health risks and psychosocial issues faced by overweight children. It describes appropriate, family-centered treatment approaches and goals, such as how to adopt healthy eating strategies and increase physical activity.

Learning Objectives:
  • Review current data on the rising incidence of overweight in children and adolescents.
  • Understand the health risks of overweight, including the psychosocial issues and increased incidence of adulthood obesity.
  • Appropriately diagnose overweight and its co-morbidities in the pediatric population.
  • Formulate appropriate treatment approaches and goals.
  • Teach parents specific skills for the prevention and management of overweight in their children.
