The massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit Japan around 2:46 pm, March 11, 2011. One of the biggest earthquakes recorded in history, it was followed by more than 50 aftershocks, many of them with a magnitude greater than 6.0. The earthquake triggered a 23-foot tsunami that buried many northern towns in a wall of water, killing several thousands of people.
The AAFP is asking for member donations to support relief efforts in the area. Contributions will go to help our partner relief agencies, Heart to Heart International and International Medical Corps (IMC). Find more information about IMC's relief efforts in Japan.
