Educational Partners
Action for Healthy Kids
-- Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) is a nonprofit organization composed of volunteers (educators, physicians, parents and nutrition and fitness professionals) in every state. AFHK works with schools to improve children’s nutrition and increase their physical activity, which in turn improves children’s readiness to learn. The goal is to prevent childhood obesity and make it possible for all kids to do their very best at school each day.
America On the Move
-- America On the Move (AOM), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping individuals and communities improve health and quality of life, released the AOM Healthcare Professional Toolkit. The Toolkit, developed in cooperation with AAFP and its program, Americans In Motion, is free to download, and is filled with tools and resources to help health care professionals educate and motivate their patients to commit to making two small changes every day: taking 2,000 extra steps and cutting 100 calories.
International Council on Active Aging
-- The International Council on Active Aging supports individuals and organizations who desire to stay at the forefront of healthy aging. This select group benefits from educational products and services, as well as resources and tools designed to help improve the health of adults over the age of 50.
International Food Information Council
-- IFIC's mission is to communicate science-based information on food safety and nutrition to health and nutrition professionals, educators, journalists, government officials and others providing information to consumers. IFIC's purpose is to bridge the gap between science and communications by translating research into understandable and useful information for opinion leaders and ultimately, consumers.
National Athletic Trainers' Association
-- Certified athletic trainers (ATs) are unique allied health care professionals who bring preventive expertise to family physicians. Athletic trainers specialize in the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses. As physician extenders, ATs provide excellent in-office patient education and support physician outreach activities to high schools, colleges and corporate industrial locations. The National Athletic Trainers' Association represents and supports 30,000 members of the athletic training profession through education and research.
Shaping America's Youth
-- Shaping America’s Youth (SAY) is a public/private initiative working to unify nationwide efforts to improve childhood physical activity and nutrition. SAY is centralizing information on community programs via its online survey and searchable program registry, and acquiring grassroots input from town meetings across the U.S. This information will be compiled into a community-based plan of action to enjoin all Americans in reversing the childhood obesity epidemic. SAY is an initiative of the ADA’s Shaping America’s Health.
We Can!
-- We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition) is a national public education outreach program designed by the National Institutes of Health to help children 8-13 years old maintain a healthy weight through improving food choices, increasing physical activity, and reducing screen time. We Can! is unique because it provides practical tips and materials to parents and families in home and community settings. The Web site provides community groups, health care professionals, parents and caregivers with a variety of resources and materials for download or order.
