AIM Program Steps

Step One: "Family Physicians" -- The initial phase of AIM focused on the first level of awareness among family physicians by challenging family physicians to “walk the talk.” Step One sought to reinforce and support those physicians who personally addressed one or more of the fitness areas identified by the AIM initiative to improve their own health and the health of their families. Past president Dr. Michael Fleming issued a challenge to "Walk the Talk". This challenge spoke to all family physician members and urged them to lead healthier lives by becoming more active and making healthier food choices. Learn more about his exciting challenge.
Step Two: "Family Physicians and Their Office Staff" -- This phase was designed to develop support among the family physician office staff that is needed to make prevention efforts successful in a busy family medicine office. Healthier staff members can equal healthier offices overall. Striving to motivate the entire family physician office staff to adopt healthier lifestyles, offices across the country were challenged to participate in a six-week fitness challenge. More than 1,700 individuals signed up and nearly 600 completed the program, logging more than 258 million steps. View the results of the fitness challenge and see which offices won team prizes.
Step Three: Patients and the Public -- As the long-term focus of AIM, Step Three seeks to enable family physicians to take the fitness message to the next level, their patients. Step Three builds on the first two steps, which have generated physician and staff interest in leading and encouraging healthy lifestyles. The objective of Step Three includes building tools and resources for physicians and patients related to fitness. The primary objective of Step Three is for family physicians to understand fitness and be able to effectively communicate that to the patients in an effort to enable sustained, healthy lifestyle choices.

AIM is sponsored by the American Academy of Family Physicians and is supported by educational grants provided by core supporters. Current Silver Level supporters include AAFP Foundation and National Dairy Council.
