The AAFP Americans In Motion - Health Interventions (AIM-HI) initiative was originally conceived to address the serious problems faced by this nation as people become more sedentary, reduce physical activity, grow increasingly obese, and to bring national emphasis to the need for better preventive services. The AAFP initiated a program to encourage and support individual family physicians seeking to address fitness from a broader perspective.
AIM-HI will be a readily available resource to member physicians providing rapid access to new and existing materials and information with continuing medial education (CME) and other support. It will contain brief interventions for use in physicians' offices and community presentations, which can be easily adapted to a variety of audiences of all ages, genders and cultures. This program is designed for family physicians and others addressing the key areas of nutrition, exercise, well-being, community and family.
The family physician is uniquely positioned throughout the United States in urban, suburban and rural areas and can function at the center of the initiative due to the acceptance and respect enjoyed within their own communities. Family physicians care for the entire family and can implement cross-generational, culturally diverse programs that appropriately fit in each community and practice.
This ten-year initiative was created with the following vision, mission and goals.
Vision: Promote "fitness" as a path to health for all members of the American family.
Mission: Improve the health of all Americans by implementing a multifaceted fitness program addressing physical activity, nutrition, and emotional well-being in the individual, family and community.
