Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research -- Established by the Government of Alberta in 1980, the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) supports biomedical and health research at Alberta universities, affiliated institutions, and other medical and technology-related institutions.
British Columbia: Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research -- As British Columbia's provincially-mandated health research organization, the Michael Smith Foundation has funding programs designed to attract, train and retain excellent researchers; enhance investigators' productivity and ability to bring in national and international sources of funding; and support new initiatives that address emerging priorities, innovation and change specific to the needs of BC's health system and economy.
Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) -- As Canada's premier health research funding agency, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research fund over 8,500 researchers in universities, teaching hospitals, and research institutes across Canada.
Health Canada -- In partnership with provincial and territorial governments, this agency provides national leadership to develop health policy, enforce health regulations, promote disease prevention and enhance healthy living for all Canadians.
National Cancer Institute of Canada -- Link to the National Cancer Institute of Canada homepage which includes a quick link to the current "Support for Research and Training" manual. The National Cancer Institute is a joint initiative through the Department of National Health and Welfare and the Canadian Cancer Society.
National Research Council (NRC) Canada -- NRC is a Government of Canada organization responsible for undertaking, assisting, and promoting research in various scientific fields of importance to Canada, including biotechnology.
Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada -- NSERC is the primary federal agency investing in university research and training in the natural sciences and engineering.
Networks of Centres of Excellence -- Three Canadian federal granting agencies - CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC - and Industry Canada combine their efforts to support and oversee the NCE initiative. Networks of Centres of Excellence are partnerships among universities, industry, government and not-for-profit organizations aimed at turning Canadian research and entrepreneurial talent into economic and social benefits for all Canadians.
Ontario Centres of Excellence -- Collectively, the Centres promote the economic development of Ontario through directed research, commercialization of technology, and training. Among the centres' areas of interest is photonics, including innovative medical imaging technologies.
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada -- SSHRC supports university-based research and graduate training in the social sciences and humanities.
