Presenter: Maureen Baker, DM, FRCGP
Institution: National Patient Safety Agency
Introduction: The National Patient Safety Agency has developed an electronic learning programme for Root Cause Analysis (RCA). This is designed primarily as an educational tool for NHS practioners, but is also being evaluated by Southampton medical School as part of the undergraduate curriculum. The presentation will describe the RCA programme. This consists of material which has undergone 'treatment' and is presented with high quality graphics and sound. This material will also be backed up with a collection of case reports, scenarios etc. that practitioners will submit as they work through the programme. The RCA product is designed to be applied in all NHS sectors, including primary (ambulatory care). The setting is England and Wales.
The presentation will then describe the evaluation undertaken by Southampton Medical School of the usefulness and effectiveness of this product in the undergraduate setting. As this is a web-based product, this programe will be available, free of charge world-wide. Although set in the British NHS, the principles it describes are generic and can be applied in any healthcare setting.
