Basic Life Support in Obstetrics

The Basic Life Support in Obstetrics (BLSOR) program has been developed to prepare participants to manage normal labor and obstetrical emergencies. BLSO is appropriate for several audiences, including: pre-hospital care providers, emergency department personnel, as well as medical, nursing and physician assistant students.

BLSO is a one-day course that offers evidence-based, hands-on workshops with mnemonics and case-based discussions that can play an important role in promoting teamwork. Pre-hospital resuscitation, communication in transit and transition to hospital care can be improved when pre-hospital and hospital providers share a conceptual framework.

Serve as Faculty at a BLSO Course

If you are an ALSO Approved Instructor or ALSO Advisory Faculty and would like to serve as faculty for future BLSO courses, please email blso@aafp.org and include your NAME (first and last), CITY and STATE and you will be added to the BLSO Instructor List that is provided to BLSO sponsors who are seeking their fifty percent approved instructors to teach at their courses.

Teaching in a BLSO course does not count toward the requirement of teaching in three courses every five years to maintain the ALSO Approved Instructor status. But, please know that the need for instructors for BLSO courses is great and your involvement is very much appreciated by the ALSO Advisory Board and staff.
