Course Planning & Timeline

Curriculum Materials

The AAFP will send course materials to the course director approximately six weeks before the course is scheduled. The course director should then send the ALSO syllabus to participants at least one month in advance of the course. This provides ample opportunity for the participant to read the syllabus and to formulate questions prior to the course. It is helpful to enclose a reminder with the syllabus, telling attendees to bring the syllabus to the course since additional syllabi will not be available. Paper slides are now contained at the end of each chapter of the syllabus. View a sample timetable for planning the course below.

Sample Timeline for Planning an ALSO Course

Timeline Planning Schedule
4+ months prior Notify AAFP of intent to conduct an ALSO course via the ALSO Course Request Form
4+ months prior Sign the Memorandum of Agreement and return to ALSO staff
4+ months prior Obtain meeting space and hotel rooms
3+ months prior Select faculty – Obtain Conflict of Interest information and confirm faculty
3+ months prior Contact faculty to ensure they have a new instructor manual, 5th edition, February 2012. If they do not, sponsor will need to purchase one for them. It is a requirement for all sponsors with courses on or after May 1, 2012 to ensure their faculty are teaching from the new instructor manual.
2+ months prior Submit the order form to the AAFP Contact Center, indicating the number of materials, including mannequin rentals, if needed. The CD-ROM of Course Materials is a required purchase for each course. This CD-ROM includes all of the forms necessary for conducting an ALSO course.
2+ months prior Distribute ALSO approved promotional brochures and accept registrations
2+ months prior Obtain forceps and vacuum extraction apparatus, along with other necessary equipment as needed
4+ weeks prior Course coordinator/director should send the ALSO Syllabus to each registrant
4+ weeks prior Send ALSO Instructor Manuals to each instructor. Paper slides for the lectures are contained in the final section of the syllabus.
1 week after Submit the Nurse Roster (alphabetized with RN signatures) to ALSO staff
2-4 weeks after Complete and submit the Participant/ Faculty form and IC evaluations. Return all required course materials to ALSO staff.
Upon receipt of all materials After receiving the required course forms, ALSO staff will update participant/faculty records and issue a wallet card and certificate to all participants who passed the course.
