Global Family Medicine: Our Opportunity and Responsibility

Daniel Ostergaard, MD

As vice president for health of the public and interprofessional activities, Dr. Ostergaard has oversight responsibilities for the international work of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and its relationships with other medical organizations in the United States and abroad. Through these relationships, he coordinates international activities and directs the AAFP Center for International Health Initiatives. Dr. Ostergaard will address the many opportunities and related responsibilities in global family medicine.

The Thomas L. Stern, MD, Lectureship honors the visionary founder and director emeritus of the Residency Assistance Program (RAP), Thomas L. Stern, MD. Dr. Stern passed away in Sun Lakes, AZ, on May 28, 2011. An extraordinary educator, Dr. Stern had contributed to the specialty of family medicine for more than half a century. As AAFP Education Division Director in 1975, he envisioned RAP as a way to help new or struggling residency programs. With successful program directors serving as consultants, he began to identify and share best practices among residency programs, which remains RAP’s mission today.

The recipient of several honors and awards, Dr. Stern served as an executive of both the AAFP and the AAFP Foundation until his retirement in 1991.

The Thomas L. Stern, MD, Lectureship has been delivered during the RAP Workshop annually since 1991.
