The AAFP and the CFPC have a bilateral reciprocal accreditation agreement whereby:
CME activities held across the Canada - U.S. border are accredited according to the nationality of the primary target audiences regardless of where the providers are located. The activities will be reviewed according to the criteria of the accrediting organization.
A CME activity is to be accredited by the CFPC if the primary target audience is Canadian. If it is to be held in Canada by a U.S. provider, this is done through the appropriate CFPC Chapter office. If it is to be held in the U.S., it is done through the CFPC national office. The CFPC will inform the AAFP of all such activities.
A CME activity is to be accredited by the AAFP if the primary target audience is American. This is true if it is to be held in the U.S. by a Canadian provider or if it is to be held in Canada by a U.S. provider. The AAFP will inform CFPC of all such activities held in Canada.
CFPC members who attend CME activities that have been accredited by the AAFP for Prescribed credit can claim MAINPRO-M1 credit for interactive activities (group, online, etc.), or MAINPRO-M2 credit for reading/testing.
Organizers of such activities who would like to promote their activities to CFPC members can remind them of the reciprocal agreement. Upon written confirmation from the AAFP that an activity has been accredited, the following statement can be used in activity materials but must be presented exactly as indicated:
Members of the College of Family Physicians of Canada are eligible to receive ____ (MAINPRO-M1, MAINPRO-M2, or MAINPRO-C) credits for participation in this activity due to reciprocal agreement with the American Academy of Family Physicians.
AAFP members who participate in CME activities that have been accredited by the CFPC for MAINPRO-M1, MAINPRO-M2, or MAINPRO-C credits can claim AAFP Prescribed credit.
Organizers of such activities who would like to promote their activities to AAFP members can remind them of the reciprocal agreement.
