Guidelines for Writing Learning Objectives

The following tools, policies, and general information are provided to assist faculty in the development and design of CME Courses.

The Guidelines for Writing Learning Objectives were created to better assist you, as AAFP Faculty, in writing performance-based learning objectives. In order to maintain ACCME accreditation, learning objective must be: observable, measurable and focused on the learner. Learning objectives clearly communicate the direction of the curricular content, define how the gap in learning will be addressed and enable the evaluation of learning. Please follow the provided guidelines in the development of performance-based learning objectives for your presentations.

Guidelines for Test Writing

The Guidelines for Test Writing were created to assist AAFP faculty in the development of writing pre and post-tests. In order to maintain ACCME accreditation, the AAFP must evaluate the effectiveness of CME activities; pre and post-tests are one learning strategy that provides assessment of physician competence while also providing additional learning opportunities.

PowerPoint Style Guide

The PowerPoint Style Guide gives instruction on slide design, presentation length, source citations and other best practices for developing slide presentations. All presentations for the AAFP must follow the style guide.

Learning Categories

AAFP Learning Categories specify the delivery method that allows attendees to choose the sessions that best fit their learning style. The various presentation approaches are designed to connect educational delivery methods to adult learning theory.
