AMA Rule Change for Enduring Materials
Dear AAFP CME Faculty,
One of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) most important priorities is to provide high-quality continuing medical education (CME). The AAFP is committed to offering opportunities to improve competence, support performance, and increase efficiency in practice opportunities. We value your desire to share knowledge with physicians, colleagues, residents, and students and commit to helping this grow in the future.
As a CME provider, the AAFP is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to award AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM (the American Medical Association Physician's Recognition Award), in addition to AAFP Prescribed Credit. The AMA recently announced changed to AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM affecting all accredited providers, including the AAFP, that will changed the way credit is being claimed for journal-based & self-study CME activities, beginning July 1, 2011.
For CME content published on or after July 1, 2011, a minimum competency (i.e., score) of 80% must be met, as directed by the AAFP Commission on Continuing Professional Development (COCPD). Our online quizz tool will also be enabled to have access through an iPhone, smartphone, iPad or other web-enabled mobile device and will provide immediate feedback (with an opportunity to answer the question again if necessary).
As one of the strategic objectives, the AAFP prioritizes providing high quality CME. The new AMA rule will not affect the way content is developed and/or implemented. And, as faculty, this development provided you opportunities to further improve learner competence and enhance performance.
If you have questions regarding the new AMA rule change, please contact Kathy Marian at (800) 272-2237 Ext. 6540 or kmarian@aafp.org. Thank you for your dedicated service to fulfilling the educational needs of our many CME learners.
Sincerely,
Ann Karty, MD, FAAFP
Medical Director
Division of Continuing Medical Education
