Summary

This 60-minute, lecture-based presentation discusses individual wellness plans; compares different types of impairment in physician colleagues; addresses warning signs consistent with impairment and resources for managing potential issues; and identifies guidelines from the American Medical Association's Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs on physician health and wellness.

Author Information

Robert Alan Bonakdar, MD, FAAFP, is the director of pain management at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, La Jolla, California, and a member of the pain management committee at Scripps Green Hospital, San Diego. Dr Bonakdar earned a medical degree at the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Las Vegas and completed a family practice residency at Sharp Grossmont Hospital, San Diego. He completed a fellowship in integrative medicine at Scripps Clinic/Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, a course in acupuncture at University of California, Los Angeles, and studied tai chi/qi gong, meditation and acupuncture in Southeast Asia under the Richter International Fellowship program.

Dr Bonakdar is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a member of several medical organizations including the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. He has also served on the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements review committee for the Annual Bibliography of Significant Advances in Dietary Supplement Research.
