Summary

This 60-minute, lecture-based presentation identifies the recommendations of the US Preventive Services Task Force for screening male patients and the vaccination recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices; and addresses lifestyle modifications for men to maintain health.

Author Information

Joel J. Heidelbaugh, MD, is an associate professor and the medical student clerkship director in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, where he has served on the faculty since completing his residency in 1999. He is also active in predoctoral education at the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr Heidelbaugh graduated from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, and completed a family medicine residency at St Joseph's Hospital Health Center in Syracuse.

Dr Heidelbaugh’s clinical interests include medical student and resident teaching, cost-effective and evidence-based provisions of care, treatment of upper gastrointestinal disorders, and men’s health. He also has a strong interest in curriculum development. His current projects for medical students include the development of a primary care urology and men's health curriculum, the development of a chronic disease management curriculum with a focus on motivational interviewing to improve clinical outcomes, and teaching the appropriateness of specialty referral through multimedia tools. Dr Heidelbaugh won the Department of Family Medicine teaching award in 2006.
