Addiction: Viewing Addiction as a Chronic Illness: Recognition, Diagnosis and Management in the Office-based Setting

This lecture-based presentation addresses the recognition, diagnosis, and management of addiction in the office-based setting.

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the evolving definitions of addiction, including the difference between addiction, dependence, abuse, and intoxication
  2. Review neurobiological causes of addiction in different patient populations
  3. Select tools to assess patients with potential addictive behaviors and prepare plans to refer them for enhanced evaluation and/or treatment
