Learning Objectives

After reading this CME Bulletin, you should be able to:

  1. Discuss the environmental and cognitive-behavioral contributors to the epidemic of children who are “overfed but undernourished” in order to mitigate the effects of those influences.
  2. Engage in a fitness conversation with patients, providing them with individualized, specific steps for achieving an active lifestyle, healthy nutrition and emotional well-being.
  3. Motivate young patients to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle by discussing practical fitness strategies during well-child visits.

Author Information

Michelle May, M.D., F.A.A.F.P., is a board-certified family physician. She is the founder and director of Am I Hungry?®, a multidimensional weight management program. She is the author of Am I Hungry? What to Do When Diets Don’t Work and ‘H’ is for Healthy – Weight Management for Kids. She is past president of the Arizona Academy of Family Physicians, alternate delegate and delegate in the American Academy of Family Physicians Congress of Delegates and co-chair of the Women’s Health and Physician Wellness Conference. She serves on the AAFP Commission on the Health of the Public and the Americans in Motion Advisory Panel, and participated on the Arizona Obesity Prevention Healthcare Workgroup and the Keystone Forum on Away-from-Home Foods – Opportunities for Preventing Weight Gain and Obesity.

CME Accreditation Information
This activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 0.75 Prescribed credit by the American Academy of Family Physicians. AAFP accreditation begins July 17, 2006. The term of approval is for two years from this date with option for yearly renewal. This activity has been renewed from July 17, 2008 to July 16, 2009.

The AAFP is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Academy of Family Physicians designates this educational activity for a maximum of 0.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

AAFP Members
AAFP members wishing to obtain CME credit for completing this activity should read the CME Bulletin, complete the self-assessment quiz and evaluation, indicate the number of credits they are reporting for this activity, and submit the Answer Sheet to the AAFP by mail or fax, or online. If the form is returned by mail or fax, your CME credits will be posted for you. If you complete the quiz and evaluation online, the credits will be posted automatically to your CME Record.

Nonmembers
Physicians who are not members of the AAFP may request a letter documenting activity completion. To do so, please check the appropriate box on the self-assessment quiz answer sheet and return it to the AAFP.
