FAQ

How much CME credit can I earn by using Home Study?

The monthly editions of the AAFP Home Study program have been reviewed and are accepted for up to seven (7) Prescribed hours of CME credit by the American Academy of Family Physicians (5 hours per monograph; 2 hours per audio program). Go to the CME Statement.

How long do I have to complete Home Study materials for credit?

You have two years from the date of publication to submit each monograph and audio answer card. The final return date for all Home Study materials is stated on the answer card.

PLEASE NOTE: You will receive CME credit for the year in which each answer sheet is received at the AAFP.

How does my CME credit get recorded?

The Home Study department keeps a database of subscriber CME hours.

When you submit your completed answer sheet, it is important that you include your subscriber (Academy) ID number as well as your name. This information will allow Home Study staff to promptly process your answer sheets and ensure that your CME hours are posted to your record. AAFP members will have their hours automatically posted to their Academy CME record.

Each February, certificates of participation are mailed to all subscribers who submitted Home Study CME hours in the previous calendar year.

What topics are covered?

The Home Study monograph series is based on a 6-year curriculum (72 issues). Once a curriculum cycle is completed, a topic may be repeated in the next cycle, but clinical information is new each time a topic is published. Go to the Monograph curriculum.

The Home Study Audio topics are selected from a rolling 3-year curriculum that includes adult medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics, and family practice topics. Go to the Audio curriculum.

Can Home Study help me with Board review?

AAFP Home Study is used as a longitudinal Board review tool. The 6-year curriculum coincides with your recertification cycle. There are Board review programs designed for intensive review: the archival Home Study CD-ROM, Core Content Review, and AAFP Family Practice Board Review Audio CME.

Can I share my subscription with another physician?

The Home Study program has an unadvertised "shared" subscription option. This option allows two or more physicians to share a subscription without getting multiple copies of the materials. The additional users receive their own sets of CME reporting answer sheets each month, allowing each physician to submit separate answer sheets for credit. Please call 800-274-2237, ext. 5298, to order.

How many CME hours do I need?

AAFP by-laws require Active members to accrue during each three-year re-election period a minimum of 150 hours of AAFP-approved CME, of which at least 75 hours must be prescribed credit and at least 25 hours must come from group experiences.

How long is each audio program?

The monthly audio program is one hour long, with two or more discussions based on the length of each discussion. Preview Audio program. (PDF file: 1 page/97 KB. More about PDF files.)

Is the information covered in the monograph the same information recorded on the audio program?

Audio topics are different from topics covered in the monographs.

Could you send me more information on your program?

You may preview the online samples (available on the Combined Subscription page) or you may request a sample packet at no charge. The packet will include a sample of the monograph and audio programs with enrollment information, so you can preview the quality of the educational materials at your convenience. Go to Contact Us.
