FP Essentials™ Requests for Proposals

Dear Colleague:

This letter is a solicitation to your faculty to author a manuscript for the AAFP FP EssentialsTM program. FP EssentialsTM is a subscription-only, continuing medical education and board review program with approximately 5,000 subscribers. Each month, subscribers receive an FP EssentialsTM monograph. The FP EssentialsTM monographs are substantial reviews, following a multiyear curriculum that covers most major aspects of clinical family medicine.

Manuscripts must be evidence-based, problem-focused, and case-oriented. The final content of the manuscript is negotiated between the author and an FP EssentialsTM medical editor. The medical editor will review all proposals, select one or more for further consideration, and contact prospective faculty directly before making a final selection. The selected author(s) will collaborate with the medical editor to finalize content and produce drafts and final manuscripts by negotiated due dates.

We are currently soliciting authors for manuscripts on the following topics:
Hepatobiliary Conditions -- draft manuscript from author due January 5, 2010
Wound Care/Skin Ulcers -- draft manuscript from author due January 5, 2010
Acute Coronary Syndrome -- draft manuscript from author due February 1, 2010
Foot Conditions -- draft manuscript from author due February 1, 2009
Chronic Lung Disease Update -- draft manuscript from author due March 1, 2010
Musculoskeletal Conditions in Children -- draft manuscript from author due April 1, 2010
Faculty interested in authoring an FP EssentialsTM monograph should submit a proposal containing the following:
  1. Letter stating your interest (be specific about the topic) – one page maximum
  2. A proposal for the monograph’s content – two pages maximum
  3. Curriculum vitae for all proposed authors
  4. Writing sample – prepare a one-page single-spaced sample of original text that deals with the topic of the monograph you propose to write. We suggest that this one-page writing sample be about the core of the topic, rather than introductory or general material, so that we can get a sense for your mastery of the topic. Basically, you should be writing one page of the monograph. Reference citations can be on a second page, not included in the one-page write up.
  5. Publications – Include two publications most pertinent to the topic.
  6. Before submitting the proposal, complete the online disclosure form available at http://www.aafp.org/conflict
If you are interested in authoring a manuscript after reviewing the learning objectives, content guidelines, and author instructions, please develop a proposal as described. It is acceptable to enlist co-authors; however, one individual must be designated as the corresponding author who will communicate with editors and staff. Proposals must be submitted electronically to mweigand@aafp.org no later than October 30, 2009.
The FP EssentialsTM program will issue a $4,000 honorarium for accepted manuscripts that are received on time and meet the requirements as detailed in the Author Instructions. Receipt of manuscripts after an agreed-upon due date will result in a 20% reduction in the honorarium. Manuscripts that are sufficiently late so as to interfere with production schedules may result in nonpayment of honorarium.

Learning objectives and content guidelines are available for each topic at http://www.aafp.org/homestudy or by e-mail (mweigand@aafp.org). Author Instructions and a checklist are available at www.aafp.org/homestudy/fpessentials/authorinstructions or can be requested by from (mweigand@aafp.org).

Manuscripts must be approximately 10,000 words (excluding tables, figures, author bios, references, and other ancillary materials), and include up to 15 original tables/figures and up to 100 references. The precise length of the manuscript will be determined by the topic and content and will be negotiated with the associate medical editor at the time the proposal is considered.

Even if you have previously authored a manuscript or submitted a proposal, you will need to provide all of the above requested items again and for each proposal submitted.

We hope you and your faculty will consider this opportunity.
