Managing the Chronic Pain Patient At Risk or With a History of Addiction

This video discussion is the second activity in the series and provides family physicians with vital information on how to improve processes and outcomes in pain management including management of pain in patients at risk or with a history of addiction.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, the learner will be able to:
  • Recognize and address challenges often encountered in the management of chronic pain in patients at risk for or with a history of addiction
  • Understand the role of standard opioid therapies, as well as alternate agents (eg, methadone and buprenorphine) for the treatment of chronic pain in patients at risk for addiction
  • Define the concepts of tolerance, physical dependence, hyperalgesia, addiction, and pseudoaddiction
  • Appropriately monitor and document the treatment of pain in patients receiving chronic opioid medications
  • Describe the legal issues regarding the prescribing of Schedule II and Schedule III medications
  • Distinguish potential “red flags” of abuse and diversion of opioid medications
  • Realize the role of mental health / behavioral medicine specialists in the evaluation and management of chronic pain patients with a history of or at risk for addiction
