METRIC FAQ
Does the $25 registration fee cover the cost of MC-FP Part IV?
The $25 METRIC registration fee covers the cost of the AAFP METRIC module and dedicated customer support. It does not cover the Maintenance of Certification fees applied by The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM).
How are chart review performance measures determined?
The AAFP is an active participant in the American Medical Association (AMA)-convened Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement® (Consortium). The Consortium has posted over 200 evidence-based clinical performance measures in 42 clinical topics and conditions. The METRIC program utilizes primary care relevant measures from the Consortium in the clinical assessment step of each module.

Ten charts is not a statistically representative sample of my practice; how will that impact my results?
METRIC is designed to focus on improving processes, rather than strict research study guidelines. Reviewing 10-15 charts provides a sufficient snapshot and indicates areas of strength and opportunity for improvement.
How long must I implement my Action Plan?
It is strongly recommended that you create a project plan and set a target completion date appropriate for your specific Action Plan. A minimum of one month is required for Action Plan implementation, effective December 3, 2010.
How will I know when it is time to log back into METRIC for my re-assessment phase?
METRIC is designed to send participants an e-mail reminder prior to the re-assessment; however, due to spam filters, it is a good idea to mark your re-assessment date (provided at the end of the Action Plan submission) on your calendar as a checkpoint for your project.
Only you and your team know when your implementation is complete. Your module will be available whenever you are ready to re-assess your performance.

When working on my re-assessment phase, must I use the same 10 patient charts used during the baseline measurements?
You do NOT need to use the same 10 patient charts during your re-assessment chart review. The key factor during re-assessment is using charts from patients you’ve seen since implementing your Action Plan.
How will the ABFM know that I’ve fulfilled my Part IV requirement?
After you complete the final step (Step 10.2) in the METRIC module, your completion information will be electronically transmitted to the ABFM that day.
I don’t work in a traditional primary care setting. How do I complete MC-FP Part IV?
Diplomates who do not have continuity of care with patients (e.g., physicians working as hospitalists or in ERs) must complete a different type of Part IV activity through the American Board of Family Medicine. The AAFP suggests family physicians who have questions about this issue contact the ABFM.
I am a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). Will METRIC help me fulfill my MOC Part IV requirement?
Yes. The ABIM accepts completion of the METRIC program under the Self-directed PIM for MOC Part IV.
I work in a primary care or multi-specialty medical group. Can my colleagues and I complete the METRIC program as a group?
Multi-physician offices may register for METRIC as a group. This allows the group to join efforts for improving patient care by concentrating on specific quality improvement interventions. The group may also choose to view a group comparison report in addition to the individual assessment report. In order for each physician to receive CME credits, he or she must separately enroll in and complete the METRIC program.
You may request participation as a group by completing the Group Enrollment Form and delivering it to METRIC staff. A group must be activated before any of the participants complete their initial chart reviews.

Is providing an e-mail address essential?
Yes. METRIC is an online AAFP activity that requires an e-mail address for communication with each participant.
As a Mac user, is there anything special I need to do?
The METRIC program currently works only with the latest version of Safari, which can be downloaded from the Apple Web site: http://www.apple.com/safari/download.
How do I turn off my “pop-up blocker?”
If your computer security settings are high, you may receive a message at the top of your screen in a pale yellow box that reads, “Pop-up blocked. To see this pop-up or for additional options, please click here.”
- If working on a non-Mac computer: You must click on the yellow box and follow the directions to proceed. Pop-ups are required in METRIC.
- If working on a Mac computer: Unlock the “Block Pop-up Windows” option under the “Safari” menu.
Is it possible to download patient data electronically from my EHR into METRIC?
At this time, it is not possible to electronically upload or download data between METRIC and an EHR.
