Frequently Asked Questions About Our Self-study Programs

What are the self-study materials?
The self-study materials include recorded lectures and workshops from select AAFP courses and conferences throughout the year. Content is available in the following formats: CD, cassette, or DVD. These materials are a great way to earn CME credit at your own pace, from the location you choose.

What items are included with each self-study program?
Along with the audio/video media, a printed syllabus is included with each package. The syllabus contains the speakers’ slide handouts in black and white, printed and bound into several volumes. Each program also includes a posttest for CME credit.

What live courses will be recorded and made into self-study programs in 2007?
This year, we will produce self-study packages based on the following live courses (course dates): Sports Medicine, (February); Women's Health, (April); Board Review, (May); Geriatric Medicine, (September). Self-study programs for each course will be available about three months from the date of the course, with the exception of Board Review, which is available about four months after the course.

What’s included in the syllabus?
The syllabus contains the slides from the speakers’ presentations, printed in black and white, and coil-bound for easier handling. Each program comes with a printed syllabus so you can make a visual reference to the slides being discussed. The syllabus comes in very handy if you’ve ordered any of the audio media.

How long does it take to complete the self-study materials?
Each recorded lecture is about 30 minutes and each workshop is about one hour. If you are using the Board Review for ABFM Board Examination preparation, it’s recommended that you complete the entire package, and then go back to review the lectures before the exam. Allow yourself plenty of time for study and review.

Which electronic format do you recommend? Audio or the DVDs?
It depends on how you learn best. If you learn best by listening, audio's the way to go. Also, if you have a long daily commute, or like to listen to CME programming while you're doing other things, audio is best. If you learn best by watching, a DVD is probably the best choice for you.

How do I order a self-study learning program?
You can order our programs in a number of different ways. You can order via the AAFP's online catalog. Or call our catalog order department toll free at 1-800-944-0000. You can also order from our brochure, which is mailed twice yearly. If you’re attending a live course, you can review our products on-site.

What are the prices for the self-study programs?
We offer AAFP member, nonmember and resident pricing on our packages, so the prices vary. In addition, the price of each self-study program varies depending how many CME credits are awarded for it.

How do I receive CME credit?
It’s pretty straightforward. Watch the DVDs or listen to the CDs. Follow along in the syllabus.Take the posttest and record your answers. Return the answer sheet, evaluation, and reporting form to the AAFP. We’ll grade the test, send you the correct answers, and submit the reporting form to the CME Records department. CME credit will be posted to your account within 2 to 3 days. If you're an AAFP member, you can also take the posttest online. You'll receive answers immediately, and the CME credits will post automatically to your CME record.
