Family Medicine Defined
-- Family physicians integrate the biological, clinical and behavioral sciences to provide continuing and comprehensive health care. The scope of family medicine encompasses all ages, both sexes, each organ system and every disease entity.
Training Requirements for Family Physicians
-- Family medicine residency programs are designed to provide integrated experiences in ambulatory, community and inpatient environments during three years of concentrated study and hands-on training. Family medicine residencies include rotations in the major medical disciplines with time allotted to the family medicine center to provide ongoing care to a panel of patients.
Factors Influencing Medical Students in Their Choice of Specialty
-- Because of the continuing trend away from family medicine by U.S. medical students and the potential negative impact of this trend on the U.S. health care system, the AAFP commissioned a series of studies to identify modifiable factors in medical student specialty choice.
Family Medicine Residents and Students National Conference
-- The AAFP is the only medical specialty society that sponsors an annual conference that provides an avenue both to influence the AAFP policies and gain clinical, procedural and leadership skills.
“Prepare the Personal Physician for Practice.” – The P4 Initiative
-- The P4 Initiative aims to inspire and evaluate innovation in family medicine residency education. A collaborative project with TransforMED, the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors and the American Board of Family Medicine, P4 will identify best practices in the training of future family physicians.
