Theresa Shupe, M.D., is a family physician currently in a group practice in Manassas, Va. In fall 2006, she plans to open her own solo medical practice, Lifetime Family Medicine, in Haymarket, Va.
Shupe earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 1979 and returned there to complete her master’s degree in nursing in 1983. After working with a retired family physician at Boston College, she decided to pursue her medical degree at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Washington, D.C. She graduated in 1990. While at George Washington, Shupe started a Family Medicine Interest Group, which still thrives today.
Shupe completed her residency at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla. In 1993, she joined Heritage Family Physicians in Kissimmee, Fla., where she practiced the full scope of family medicine, including obstetrics. While there, Shupe co-authored the American Family Physician journal column “Diary of a Week in Practice” from 1993 to 1999, before moving to Virginia.
Shupe has served in a variety of leadership capacities at the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), including student delegate and resident member to the AAFP governing body, the Congress of Delegates. She also served as a member of the AAFP Commission on Resident and Student Affairs.
