KANSAS CITY, Mo., August 1, 2002 — The American Academy of Family Physicians today announced an affiliation with Elsevier Science, the world’s largest medical publisher, to offer PDxMD (www.pdxmd.com) to the AAFP’s 93,500 members.

PDxMD is a new evidence-based electronic primary care information system, specially designed for use by primary care physicians in practice. With full desktop features and handheld downloadable components, PDxMD offers comprehensive, continuously updated files on more than 450 medical conditions containing information on more than 750 drugs and other therapies. Family physicians can also access a database containing more than 1,400 potential diagnoses that are organized by chief complaint, and categorized age, relative prevalence and clinical findings. Patient information sheets on more than 300 diseases can be customized by the physician and tailored to the patient’s specific care plan.

“The AAFP is committed to providing its members with tools that improve efficiency and accuracy,” said Joetta Melton, AAFP Director of Publications and Publisher of American Family Physician and Family Practice Management. “PDxMD’s easy-to-use, intuitive design makes it an ideal electronic point-of-care clinical decision support tool for our members.”

Family physicians can access PDxMD through the Academy’s Web site, www.aafp.org, and links on PDxMD will also allow users to access www.aafp.org while using the system.

“AAFP and Elsevier Science share the mission to provide physicians with the best information and tools to support the success of their practice,” said Steven Merahn, M.D., Vice President, General Medicine at Elsevier Science. “Over time, we expect PDxMD to become a technology staple among family practices.”

Founded in 1947, the AAFP represents 110,600 physicians and medical students nationwide. It is the only medical society devoted solely to primary care.

Approximately one in four of all office visits are made to family physicians. That is 240 million office visits each year — nearly 87 million more than the next largest medical specialty. Today, family physicians provide more care for America’s underserved and rural populations than any other medical specialty. Family medicine’s cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care.
