LEAWOOD, Kan. — The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) announced today it will add a comprehensive library of health information for consumers on its Web site www.familydoctor.org in July of 2002. The site will feature thousands of medically reviewed articles, animations, features and news written to be age-appropriate for three distinct audiences: parents, kids and teens.

The site will feature information across a broad spectrum of topics including parenting; general health; medical problems; developmental, behavioral and emotional issues; nutrition and fitness; and first aid and safety. In addition to the comprehensive library of age-appropriate articles, other unique features of this site include:
  • Medical Research News for Parents — summaries of current research from pediatric journals not available to consumers. The summaries are written for readers who do not have medical training;
  • My Body — an interactive tour of the body for kids (including sound effects!);
  • Pregnancy & Newborns — a section featuring more than 100 articles and a week-by-week pregnancy calendar for expecting and new parents;
  • In the Spotlight — information on in-the-news and seasonal issues like school violence and flu outbreaks;
  • Word! — a glossary of medical terms with definitions kids can understand; and
  • Daily Q & A — for parents.
“Familydoctor.org is a trusted source for health information for every member of the family,” said Robert Kelly, M.D., the site’s medical editor and an AAFP member. “We understand how important it is to reach out to kids and teens in addition to their parents. That’s why we’re offering kids and teens health information written just for them.”

The AAFP also maintains an organizational Web site, aafp.org, which includes journals and
news articles, press releases, publications, and member services and information about the organization’s meetings.

Founded in 1947, the AAFP represents 110,600 physicians and medical students nationwide. It is the only medical society devoted solely to primary care.

Approximately one in four of all office visits are made to family physicians. That is 240 million office visits each year — nearly 87 million more than the next largest medical specialty. Today, family physicians provide more care for America’s underserved and rural populations than any other medical specialty. Family medicine’s cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care.
