LEAWOOD, Kan. — The American Academy of Family Physicians’ patient Web site, familydoctor.org, will launch a twice-monthly column beginning June 1 to guide physicians and patients to the best available online health information. The first column will discuss urban myths and healthcare scares on the Internet. “Web Reviews” is written by Howard and Judi Wolinsky, authors of the 2001 book “Healthcare Online for Dummies.”
Author Judi Wolinsky is head of reference services at the Homewood, Ill., public library. She manages the library’s Web site and teaches a class in Internet searching for librarians. Howard Wolinsky was the medical writer for the Chicago Sun-Times for 15 years. In 1994, he began covering the Internet and technology beat for the newspaper.
Familydoctor.org is the Academy’s patient-centered Web site. The site directs viewers to drug information databases and self-care flowcharts. Information is available about who today’s family physicians are and the care they provide. Handouts on health topics important to today’s patient, such as diabetes, hypertension, AIDS and heart attacks, offer helpful information to consumers in an easy-to-read format.
“With so much health information online, it is difficult to discern between what is trusted, reliable information and that which is not beneficial and potentially harmful,” said Michael Springer, AAFP Vice President for Publishing and Communications. “’Web Reviews’ will offer tips and links to other reputable health sites.”
The AAFP also maintains an organizational Web site, aafp.org, which includes information about the organization’s meetings, journal and news articles, press releases, publications and member services.
