LEAWOOD, Kan. — The American Academy of Family Physicians’ (AAFP) Tar Wars program has announced that it will serve as an official information partner to the Web site SchoolAsthmaAllergy.com. The site, developed by Schering Laboratories/Key Pharmaceuticals, educates caregivers about students who have allergies and asthma. The partnership will encompass direct links to information about the AAFP Tar Wars program on the SchoolAsthmaAllergy.com Web site. Co-presentations between representatives from SchoolAsthmaAllergy.com and the AAFP Tar Wars program on children’s respiratory health are planned at educational forums throughout the United States.
Statistics show asthma is currently the third leading cause of preventable hospitalizations in the U.S., with approximately 470,000 hospitalizations and more than 5,000 deaths a year.

Another health threat to children is the issue of smoking. More than 4 million children under the age of 18 are regular smokers. The AAFP Tar Wars program was founded in response to this growing, yet preventable, public health crisis. Tar Wars is an award-winning, youth tobacco-free education program and poster contest of the AAFP, that follows an effective and innovation approach to teaching tobacco prevention, to more than 400,000 fourth- and fifth-grade students each year.

“Asthma, allergies, and smoking are three of the most significant threats to respiratory health among children. The link of the AAFP Tar Wars program to the SchoolAsthmaAllergy.com Web site and educational programs offers a comprehensive approach to supporting people who care for school-aged children,” said Joel Feigin, M.D., AAFP member and senior medical director for Schering Corporation.

Together, the AAFP Tar Wars program and Schering’s School Asthma Allergy initiative are committed to ensuring that the health of U.S. children is not comprised by tobacco.

Approximately one in four of all office visits are made to family physicians. That is 240 million office visits each year — nearly 87 million more than the next largest medical specialty. Today, family physicians provide more care for America’s underserved and rural populations than any other medical specialty. Family medicine’s cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care.
