WASHINGTON - The American Academy of Family Physicians named U.S. Rep. Nancy Johnson (R-Conn.), chair of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health, the recipient of the 2004 Award for National Leadership in Government Service. The award was presented to her at the AAFP's recent Family Medicine Congressional Conference, the annual visit to Capitol Hill by family physicians from across the country.
Rep. Johnson was cited for "outstanding Congressional leadership in support of Medicare reform, health information technology and chronic disease management policies."
"We appreciate Rep. Johnson's willingness to consider the perspective of family medicine on public policy issues," said Michael Fleming, M.D., president of the AAFP and a practicing family physician in Shreveport, La. "She consistently seeks to improve the health care system to better serve the American people."
The award honors outstanding contributions to improving the nation's health by furthering primary health care through legislation or the support for public policy initiatives. It commends exceptional individual leadership of those involved in the legislative and public policy arena.
